Cancer is regarded as a terminal disease, but that can be a thing of the past if doctors can get data about several things. Eric Lefkofsky holds that the current medical research system has failed to provide this.
Lefkofsky who is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Tempus, a technology organization that envisions to establish databases to perfect cancer treatment, believes that there is no shortage of data out there. However, there is a serious shortage of sources that can merge genomic information with therapeutic data. Mr. Lefkofsky explained this while at the Fortune Brainstorm Health conference in San Diego on Wednesday.
The renowned philanthropist went on to say that the ability to gather molecular data is critical, but clinical data is equally vital. He expounded that other than gathering data regarding the DNA and RNA of a patient, doctors also need to know the treatments their patients are on and how they are responding
A superb way to illustrate this is to consider what a researcher who is observing breast-cancer patients taking Herceptin should do. The expert should know why the drug works on 40 percent, not 60 percent of the patients and whether there is anything else going on with those who are not being helped. For instance, are they diabetic, on another drug, or both? This sort of data should flow freely between clinicians, researchers, and other medical professionals.
